THE LAND RESONATES

MUSIC AS PROMOTION OF THE REGION

Apulia has for a while been a region which makes cultural policies a tool for the promotion and development of a sector now recognised as such and whos important economic eff ects are also the object of study. The example of the Night of the Taranta and of the revival of the “pizzica salentina” are the huge successes of a movement involving this region in a widespread and diversifi ed way. Naturally these dynamics are taking place in a similar way also in other countries and
on other continents. These are crucially important dynamics in the third millennium, dynamics which involve above all the relationship between urbanization and ancestral cultures, between the hybridisation of the big city and transformation of the environment, between syncretism and preservation. Music is often the centre of gravity. Here to discuss these topics and to suggest ways to share development are the Artistic Directors of some examples of successful Italian and international initiatives.

MUSIC AND REVOLUTION
HOW TO TRANSFORM A SOCIAL AND POLITICAL REVOLUTION INTO A MUSICAL REVOLUTION. TACTICS, PROSPECTS AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE NORTH AFRICAN AND MIDDLE EASTERN MARKET.

In Iran they called it the “Green Wave”. In Tunisia it has been defi ned as the “Jasmine Revolution”. Then it was the turn of Egypt, Algeria and Libya, where it was called the “Arab Spring”. Apart from defi nitions, the need for freedom and justice has radically changed the North African and Middle Eastern geopolitical scenario in the space of a few years. While the waves of protest are having a violent impact on Syria, it becomes important to understand events which are having an eff ect on history. Like the internet, music has fought alongside young people and their fellow countrymen and women during the rebellions. Young and old musicians alike have contributed to, and sometimes even prepared, political and social uprisings. Now is the time to look to the future. To consider how these kinds of music and these musicians have been able to creatively exploit a new situation, how the possibilities of exporting the products of this musical scene will change, and which means, organisations and production teams will propose them to the world.
